ETIAS to Travel to Europe: No Fear, Just Step by Step
Europe is changing the way international travelers enter the Schengen Area. ETIAS has been discussed for years, and now its launch is getting closer.
We know that when you hear “new requirement to travel to Europe,” your first reaction might be:
More paperwork? More bureaucracy? More complications?
Take a breath. There’s no need to worry.
ETIAS is not a visa. It is an electronic pre-travel authorization system, similar to the U.S. ESTA. It is a simple online procedure completed before your trip and, when properly managed, it does not represent any major complication.
As travel planners, we know many questions may arise:
Who needs it? When does it start? How much does it cost? What happens if it’s denied?
At Vrn-e Travel Planners, we guide you step by step, answer every question, and ensure your trip to Europe begins with clarity, strategy, and peace of mind.
Because travel should feel exciting — not stressful.
Below, we explain clearly and simply what ETIAS is, who will need it, when it starts, how it works, how much it costs, and how to prepare.
What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System.
It is an electronic system that allows European authorities to pre-screen visa-exempt travelers before they arrive.
It is not a visa. It is a mandatory travel authorization required to enter the Schengen Area.
It works similarly to the U.S. ESTA or Canada’s eTA.
When Will ETIAS Start?
Although ETIAS was initially expected to launch in 2024, its implementation has been postponed.
It is now confirmed that ETIAS will begin operating in the last quarter of 2026. The exact date will be officially announced several months in advance.
Important:
There is nothing you need to do yet.
Applications cannot be submitted until the system is officially activated.
Who Will Need ETIAS?
ETIAS will be mandatory for travelers from countries that currently enter Europe visa-free for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period).
This includes citizens of countries such as:
• Colombia • Argentina • Chile
• Costa Rica • Venezuela • United States
• Canada • Mexico • Australia
• New Zealand • Japan • South Korea
…among approximately 60 countries in total.
If you can currently travel to Europe without a visa, you will need ETIAS once it becomes active.
How Much Will ETIAS Cost?
The officially confirmed fee is €20 per application for travelers between 18 and 70 years old.
Exempt from payment (but still required to apply):
•Travelers under 18
•Travelers over 70
•Certain family members of EU citizens with free movement rights
How Long Will ETIAS Be Valid?
Once approved, ETIAS will be valid for up to three years, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.
You may travel multiple times during that period, as long as you respect the 90/180-day rule.
